The Future Is Defective.

So I wrote this little poem in 2003 when the realdealnomics of Peak Oil kicked me in the groin, I was pissed and without solutions. Things have changed and the world looks bright ahead, so here I post “The Future is Defective” for your entertainment. BONUS FOR GEEKS! You can download an audio version of this Poem here.

Oil, is running out.
it’s the bottom of the barrell and the barrell’s bottomed out.
’cause the Countdown started and in just a few years
it’s going to collapse -and we can’t shed tears
or the pointing of our fingers for the world that we’ve created
driving round in SUVs and and walking round sedated
while we do nothing to stop and change
——————————————————–
Oil controls the future and past.
it’s running out, and supplies won’t last,
It’s the cause of war, and it fuels your car
it’ll kill us all, and it seems so far away –
But here’s some news for you
you think it’s just chance that Bush 1 and Bush 2
have jockeyed and lobbied to keep the world on fire?
Supply and demand of our own desires
are the downfall
that no one will talk about
all the news shows is flags and how proud you should be
well they don’t get to me
I can see through the “be all you can be”
because there’s no way to stop the machine that we are
Not with 15 miles per gallon per car
supply may decline but demand is a constant
we could turn it around – but how much do we want it?
I’m painting a picture that you don’t want to see
but if you’ll just pause a moment and listen to me –
We can can face this truth together, stop the aggression
or none of us will be around to say we learned the lesson

As supply declines, you know that prices rise
Everybody knows that –
it’s no surprise that most of life has it’s ties to oil
whether pumping gas or turning soil
we’ve built a model that can’t be changed
unless we give up our ways and thats deranged-
so with bills to pay and mouths to feed
we’re all too damn distracted
and that is why the earth will die
cause ‘we hassled those that acted
arrested those that tried
to show you that a protest is good
that the person who got maced for you was like robin hood
But we don’t want to think about the truth beyond the lies
what television show us – wool on our eyes
It’s the Special interest needs and the money and the greed
While you think about your kids in Sunday’s little league
Well imagine when the gas runs out – all the world goes dark
no food to eat – no shipping fleets and chaos makes it’s mark

If you think that I’m just spouting fear, or smoking a bunch of crack
I say to you I wish this was a prank but there’s no going back
not without a change from everyone, and a redesign of cities
we need massive efforts, or it’s looking shitty
cause the whole world is on a suicide mission
and it won’t change with career politicians in control
so fuck the news and fuck the polls
and fuck the the tanks and fuck the old way of thinking
this isn’t right wing or left wing, it’s about saving ourselves
not Santa and his Elves
cause ‘here’s what you should know:
There is no solution
and I don’t have a plan
But I see is revolution
and a finger for the ‘man’
cause they keep sending kids to die
citing security to support their lies
What we need now is less dependence and security and greed
to be brave and understand the enemy’s needs
why some people strap explosives to their chests
it’s not about who’s religion is best
we’re a species that’s been into space
Are you tellin’ me we can’t save this place?
from explosions and whatever sells commercials
ratings and advertisers stop what’s controversial
well how bout rejecting the stock holding elected?
and not the way Termininator got selected
While profits are key and jobs are needed
it’s hard to take a stand
I understand a mortgage payment
and don’t have the master plan
But I know that energy, and policy – without a fresh perspective
is undoubtedly the downfall of us all – cause the future is defective
